Why I chose this book:  The reason I chose this book was because of the first few pages I read, it just sounded like a good novel to read.

The cover was also intriguing, its a painted picture of a Japanese fighter plane heading towards an aircraft carrier.  Under that is the painted face of a man with a look of doubt on his face.

So far this book is amazing, but in a way sad. The main character, Eddy Okubo is the son of a Japanese boat builder who they call pop.  His parents are Japanese immigrants living on the island of Honolulu.  Though Eddy is only 16 he wishes to join the American army at Honolulu, and does so without his fathers consent.  After eddy joined the army his father would not talk to or look at him.  Soon after eddy joined the army he went home on his first pass to see his family.  Not 2 days into his pass, and something big was going on no one knew what.  The air was filled with planes, they could hear explosions.  No one wanted to believe that their ally Japan was attacking them, especially Eddy's father who was a very passionate man when it came to Japan.  He would not believe that His people would do such a dishonorable thing.  Not long after the attack is started Eddy is called back to the army base to fight off the Japanese surprise attack.

Chick and Cobra are 2 of a kind there are Eddy's best friends since child hood.  You meet them at the beginning of the book but they don't tell any thing about them.  They are strange characters always there but never really... how do I want to say it well talking about themselves.  We know they are Japanese like Eddy, and in the American army.  Cobra and Chick talk a lot about the stuff around them and of Eddy.  But they are there for a reason they help Eddy get through his army experience.

"All Japs move over to my right," He Said. "The rest of you Stay where you are."

This Paragraph has a lot of importance in the way the people of Japanese descent are treated.  After Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese, anyone that looked Japanese was put on lockdown until they where sure they where not spy's for Japan.  Even the Japanese-American Soldiers where Separated from the others.  For about a week every one was paranoid of the Japanese People even if they where not from Japan.  Even long after the Japanese people where allowed to go back to their businesses they where still not trusted.

Eddy Okubo and his buddy's finally think they will get to do real fighting when they get to the mainland base of McCoy.  The Truth is they will be sent to and remote island with an old abandoned army base on it, Called Ship island.  They at this time have no idea what is going on only Sweet really knows any thing.  Sweet is the Lieutenant in charge of Eddy's battalion at the time.  When they get to the island they are told nothing Sweet leaves and Ricky Kondo is left in Charge, another Lieutenant.

One thing I didn't know is that Eddy an his friends would be training dogs on a remote island.  I thought they would actually be fighting in the war once he joined up.   it hasn't really change my thinking I still know that they will not be treated like Americans In Fact the only reason they are there to help train the dogs is because they want the dogs to be able to smell out the Japanese. I still think that's wrong but I guess at the time no one was really thinking clearly.

Conflict is between The Japanese-American and The pure Americans.  The people that came from Japan before the war are being discriminated, the people act as if they are monsters. They are not treated like real people.  Even the Japanese people in the army are being treated wrong.  This Conflict however ends when the Dogs are tested to find Japanese people in the woods.  The Dog finds one of the Americans instead of the Japanese.

5 Things Eddy would probably carry in a bag would have to be a something to remind him of his family and friends, something to protect him from the dogs, something to cure all his wounds, a hand gun, and a source of food. He needs these items cause he loves his family and to protect himself so he can go home to his family.

1. Eddy Okubo is the main character in the book. He is a 16 year old American-Japanese.  During the beginning of the story Eddy is kind of selfish and does things for himself, but over time he becomes more of a man and starts to do things for his family. Eddy's personality would have to be a kind hearted young man that is working for his family and honor; funny and outgoing.
